The Cemeteries service

Memorial team

Our memorial team are responsible for inspecting memorials, recording inspections and making safe in compliance with current legislation and guidance from the Institute of Cemetery and Cremation Management.

Individual cemetery teams install foundations in accordance with the National Association of Memorial Masons code of working practice.

Actions taken to contain unsafe memorials include fencing off and banding of the memorial.

Staff have been trained to National Standards in Cemetery Maintenance and Memorial Inspection procedures.

We are carrying out a headstone safety inspection programme in all our cemeteries.  These inspections are essential to prevent accidents caused by unstable memorials and are conducted in line with Scottish Government guidelines and best practices followed by councils across Scotland.
