Motherwell - Play Area Communication Boards

Our Community Partnership Team are working towards the creation and installation of communications boards across 40 play areas in North Lanarkshire.

How did it come about

The Community Partnership Officers for Motherwell and Wishaw along with the Project Development Officer have been consulting with University of Edinburgh, Dublin City Council and NHS Speech and Language Team to create pilot communication boards which have been installed in Lyman Drive play area in Wishaw and Roman Road play area in Motherwell.

What is the outcome

A survey was created to gather feedback from parents, and care givers of children who don't use verbal communication or have communication differences, or professionals working with children, to make ensure that signs are correct.

The Community Partnership Officer's visited Innerleithan Family Learning Centre, St Aidan's Language Communication & Speech Centre and Firpark Primary School to consult and gather invaluable and honest feedback from children and teachers.

Communication boards being installed in the 40 play areas across North Lanarkshire will provide symbols that include play area equipment, who, what and feelings along with a British Sign Language symbols communication board.
