Free Period Products in schools

Period Ambassador Programme in High Schools

Period ambassadors

The Period Ambassador Programme is part of our Access to free Period Products Campaign. It brings together school staff and pupils to promote period dignity, raise awareness of where period products can be accessed and help create supportive school environments where periods can be openly discussed without stigma.

Who is Involved?

Staff champions support and guide pupil ambassadors, helping them promote period dignity and identify opportunities to improve awareness of and access to free period products in their schools.

Period ambassadors are pupils in S4 to S6 who help raise awareness, share pupil perspectives and encourage positive conversations about periods within their school communities.

Programme Aim

The programme aims to:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of period dignity and menstrual health
  • Encourage open conversations about periods and help reduce stigma
  • Improve awareness of and access to free period products in schools and in our communities.
  • Strengthen pupil voice and involvement in shaping supportive school environments
  • Promote inclusive school communities where pupils can access the products and support they need with dignity

Making a Difference

By bringing staff and pupils together, the programme supports the wider Access to Free period Products campaign and encourages shared responsibility for creating positive, lasting change in schools.

Resources and Support

A range of resources has been developed to support participating schools in delivering and maintaining the programme. These include:

  • Comic-style Period Ambassadors Starter Guide
  • Staff Champion Guide
  • Volunteer pupils recruitment and induction materials
  • Schools planning tools
  • Monitoring and evaluation templates
  • Handover resources.

These materials will help staff champions and period ambassadors understand their roles, plan activities, promote period dignity and maintain continuity in their schools. Programme resources are available for participating schools through the designated programme channels.
