Demographic information

North Lanarkshire's population is projected to decrease by an estimated 501 people in the 25-year projection period; however, this population loss masks some changes across the period.

• Population growth of around 1,377 between 2022 and 2027.
• Further growth of around 70 people between 2027 and 2032.
• Loss of around 1,948 people in the 15-year period between 2032 and 2047.

The population growth and decline will be different across different age groups in the population. The table below shows how each age group is expected to change over the projection period.

Care should be taken in interpreting the population projection figures for the reasons set out below:

• Population projections are trend-based estimates that show what happens if particular assumptions are made.  They are not forecasts and do not account for potential changes in migration policy or local factors like housing and economy policy.
• The reliability of projections decreases over time (i.e. the further into the future predictions are made for).  Predictions are also less reliable for smaller geographic areas, age groups (where predictions in the number of older people are usually more reliable than those for children), and migration estimates (which are more difficult to predict).
• As new data become available, official population figures may differ from these projections.  The latest mid-year population estimates should therefore be used where the most up to date population data is required.
