What's happening at the Station?

ScotRail have appointed Balfour Beatty to carry out the work at Motherwell Rail Station.

The first phase of the work has now finished. The old building at the bottom of Platform 1 has been knocked down to make way for a new staff car park.

They started work on the main station building and platforms in August.

You will still be able to use the station when the work is being done.

What's going to be done?

This project will improve transport links at Motherwell Rail Station and help to increase the role of the station as a key transport connection hub in the future.

The project also includes works to Muir Street and the station forecourt.

These works will:

  • reduce traffic congestion in the town centre
  • improve the local environment
  • improve accessibility to public transport

We are working with our partners ScotRail, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and Transport Scotland on the proposals for Motherwell Rail Station.

The project will be delivered in two parts:

Motherwell Rail Station - ScotRail with support from SPT and Transport Scotland.

  • Redevelopment of the station including an enhanced station building and brighter larger concourse
  • Improved ticket retailing facilities and improved passenger facilities

Muir Street Interchange - North Lanarkshire Council as part of City Deal.

  • Expansion of bus facility on Muir Street
  • Creation of a new station access road with new facilities for taxis
  • Car drop-off and disabled parking and improvements to pedestrian and cycling access

By working with ScotRail as they upgrade Motherwell Rail Station, we will ensure the projects complement each other and make the most of the funding opportunities.

What's happening now?

The work on Motherwell Rail Station has started. The works are being lead by ScotRail and will be done in phases over 16 months and access to the station will still be available.

The planning application for the proposals to improve Muir Street has been submitted.

The 21 day period for public comments has ended, but you can view all the information on this by using the reference number 20/00345/FUL on the Online planning system

Park and Ride and Strathclyde Park work

The work we have already done has created 80 extra parking spaces across three car parks. This has been thanks to funding by SPT.

Our contractor, Newly will be back on site in August to complete tree planting and lighting at the car parks.

We have also been improving cycling and walking links between the station and Strathclyde Park.

    What's happening next?

The work we are doing on Muir Street is expected to start in summer/autumn 2021 and be completed by Spring 2022.

Further updates on timescales and any restrictions during the work will be provided when it is available.

Updates on the proposals for Muir Street will be provided to local businesses in Motherwell Town Centre and to local groups in the Motherwell Area later this year.

    What have we done?

The latest proposals for Muir Street have been developed thanks to the pdf icon feedback [1Mb] you provided during the consultation in June 2018.

We are still working with ScotRail, SPT and Transport Scotland on the proposals for Motherwell Rail Station. The works will be led by ScotRail once all the project funding is in place.
