Bus stop and taxi rank closure

The taxi rank on Muir Street will be closed from Monday 14 March to 30 May to allow a larger bus stop and new taxi rank to be it to be built.

There is an alternative taxi rank at High Road. A temporary taxi rank will also be provided in the Hope Street car park.

The nearest alternative bus stops are on Hamilton Road across from the library, and on Merry Street in the town centre. A temporary bus stop will also be provided on Muir Street next to the Ladywell footbridge.

We are going to improve the current bus and taxi facilities at Muir Street through City Deal funding.

By working with ScotRail as they upgrade Motherwell Rail Station, we will ensure the projects complement each other and make the most of the available funding.

The work we are doing on Muir Street started on 10 January 2022 and is expected to finish by July 2022

The final proposals for Muir Street have been developed thanks to the feedback you provided during the consultation in June 2018.

Motherwell Station and Muir Street upgrade work

What will the project provide?

  • create a high-quality bus, train and bike transport interchange on Muir Street
  • expansion of bus facility on Muir Street
  • a new station access road with new facilities for taxis
  • car drop-off and disabled parking
  • improvements to pedestrian and cycling access

To help you, we have provided answers to the questions we think you may have about the project.

Please use our interactive plan to find out more about what the project will provide on Muir Street.

The project

What's happening now?

We have appointed contractor Balfour Beatty to carry out the work.

The work started in January and is expected to be complete by July. It will be coordinated with the work at Motherwell Rail Station to reduce disruption to local businesses and residents.

Bus stop and taxi rank

The bus shelter on Muir Street has been removed for refurbishment and is expected to be reinstalled in June.

To make space to build a larger bus stop on Muir Street, the existing taxi rank and bus stop on Muir Street will need to be closed for a few months.

The taxi rank closed on Monday 14 March and the bus stop will close on Monday 21 March. The bus stop is due to reopen in early June and the new taxi rank is due to be open in July.

Whilst these facilities are closed, alternative and temporary facilities will be provided.

Taxis will be able to use the taxi rank at High Road across from the Heritage Centre. We will also provide a temporary taxi rank in the Hope Street car park, close to footpath links to the station, as soon as possible.

A temporary bus stop will be provided on Muir Street next to the Ladywell footbridge. Alternative bus stops are available nearby on Hamilton Road across from the library and on Merry Street in the town centre.

Alternative pedestrian routes will be in place to the station entrance during this work.

Road closures

Some road closures will be needed at weekends to carry out work on the Muir Street footpaths and roadway safely.

Further details of the dates of road closures during the work will be provided as soon as we have them.

Planning application

In July 2021, we recently received planning permission for the proposals to improve Muir Street.

You can view all the information on this by using the reference number 20/00345/FUL on our online planning system.

What's happening next?

The work at Muir Street is expected to be finished by July, at the same time as the work at Motherwell Rail Station.

As part of the contract Balfour Beatty will provide work experience opportunities, a careers event with local schools, and contributions towards local community projects.

What else are we doing?

We have appointed a company to carry out design work for the walking, wheeling and cycling route improvements.

Work to widen the path from Merry Street at the Woodcutter pub, past the Aquatec centre to the pedestrian crossing on Hope Street, have been completed. New signs have also been installed.
