Cumbernauld Community Priorities Highlights 26/27

Bike Fix Day in Carbrain

The Bike Fix Day was delivered as a community-led initiative to improve access to active travel, provide practical support to local families and create positive opportunities for community engagement. The event brought together local partners to address community needs identified through ongoing engagement with residents. This project contributed to the Cumbernauld Local Outcome Improvement Plan Priorities of Youth Engagement and Consultation, Communication and Engagement, Public and Community Transport and Food and Financial Insecurity.

How did the project come about?

What did you do? When, where and how?

Carbrain Community Events (CCE) organised a Bike Fix Day at the Link Centre, Cumbernauld, and invited the Community Partnership Team to support the event by asking us to organise targeted financial inclusion support to local families.

The event was developed in response to discussions with local partners and feedback from previous community engagement activities, which identified a need for practical support alongside opportunities to encourage positive community participation.

Working alongside CCE and partner organisations, the Community Partnership Team arranged targeted advice and support to families experiencing financial pressures, including information on available financial inclusion services and wider community support. The event also offered free bicycle repairs, recycled bicycles, access to period dignity products and signposting to a range of local services.

The event enabled the CPT to engage directly with residents and young people, supporting them to complete the Local Outcome Improvement Survey. This provided an opportunity to gather valuable community feedback, ensuring that local views and priorities help to inform future plans.

The Bike Fix Day was promoted by Carbrain Community Events through local community networks, partner organisations and social media channels to maximise awareness and encourage participation from local residents and families.

What were the outcomes?

The project delivered positive outcomes for local families and young people by improving access to active travel, increasing community participation and connecting families with local support services.

Outputs included:

  • 75 families attended the event.
  • 40 bicycles were repaired or recycled, increasing access to affordable and sustainable transport.
  • 32 Local Outcome Improvement Plan (LOIP) surveys were completed, helping to inform future community priorities.
  • More than 1,000 period dignity products were distributed to residents.
  • Four referrals were made to The Wise Group Mentoring Project for additional support.

The event also strengthened partnership working, increased awareness of local services and created positive volunteering opportunities for young people.
