Before the North Lanarkshire Local Plan, five separate local plans were used to determine planning applications.
These include:
- Cumbernauld Local Plan adopted 1993
- Kilsyth Local Plan adopted 1999
- Monklands Local Plan adopted 1995
- Northern Corridor Local Plan adopted 2005
- Southern Area Local Plan adopted 2008
