Bellshill Community Priorities Highlights 26/27

Holytown war memorial garden – solar lighting

Holytown Environmental Group requested support through the Local Development Programme to illuminate Holytown’s war memorial garden pathways to make people feel safer in the darker evenings.

This project contributes to the following priorities: Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing, Community Resilience and Participation and Community Safety.

How did the project come about?

Holytown Environmental Group initially discussed the idea to have tree lighting in the gardens. After feasibility checks were not successful, alternative lighting options were discussed with the group.

After further discussion with the project officer, the group agreed to have solar lighting installed along the pathways in the gardens. This meant that local people could still enjoy the gardens as the evenings got darker. With the area illuminated it gives people a sense of feeling safer in the area.

What was the outcomes of the project?

The pathway lighting allows local people to use the gardens later in the evenings and at night. Improved lighting may allow them to feel safer whilst enjoying the beautiful improvements already made to the area.
